Baker Man [ SCBD, Kafe ]

    (Was) New Spot in Town

Pretty coffee and a bunch of croffles for boys' catch up session. Jk. The coffee is for me, but the croffles are unavailable for purchase :(

Meet @bakerman.id of Ashta District 8, SCBD Jakarta. The recently opened shopping mall and chill out spot in SCBD, Jakarta. The aroma of freshly baked croissants and pastries seduced my nose and lead me through to The Baker Man. They had long queue for their pastries, especially their croffles, so I guess they do know what they're doing, hey?

We opted to have a dine in session, with a proper seat down setting. A cup of classic iced milk coffee with condensed milk for me, and some servings of pastries to share. Sadly, the only obtainable item was the coffee, and all the pastries have been sold out already and they were preparing for their next batch, unavailable for me to lay my hands on those babies during our catch-up session at that time.

That gorgeous croffles pic was taken with the telephoto lens of @samsungindonesia Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, never disappoints. The service was also top notch, in the middle of their limitations, they still managed to deliver the best of their selves. Kudos to that 1 particular waiter who served our table.

Coffee was alright, you can taste the slight bitterness in every sweetness of a single sip, making it well balanced and delish. Surprisingly, it gave him a nice kick of caffeine, enough to fuel me through my walking journey from SCBD to the closest MRT station. Didn't expect the caffeine content of this innocent cup of coffee to be that strong, love it.

Look forward to get some of those croffles the next time I visit you guys @bakerman.id

    Martabak Pecenongan 78 [ Menteng, Indonesia ]

Get Both the Thick and Thin Sweet Cakes!

Snacks/munchies are mandatories for us, so here we took the benefit of being in Jakarta, to lay our hands on @martabakgadingpecenongan 78, idk if I tagged the correct account but you guys know what I mean. Order them via food delivery services so you don't have to deal with Jakarta's awesome traffic, and get both variants of the classic crust and thin + crispy (TipKer/Tipis Kering).

Now on to the stars, Martabak Manis. Those neighbouring countries of Indonesia try to claim it as their culinary icons, but have a shot here and you'll see who deserves to have the title of the OG, Indonesia or those claim-overs. It's an oversized sweet, fragrant and fluffy pancake topped with various toppings, folded and cut into pieces.

We got the choco peanut and cheese topping, drizzled with condensed milk. Awesome. No need to worry about the calories. There's no way a normal person could finish a whole box in one go, so I put the remaining in the fridge and have them over next few days. Without reheating them, they still taste as good as new (a tad exaggerating, but for sure they tasted damn good).

The thin and crispy version was equally gorgeous, crispy and slightly chewy with comforting filling. Have this with a cup of black coffee or strong tea and have your arvo teatime sorted. Once you put a piece in your mouth, it's very hard to stop nibbling on it. My only regret was I only ordered 1 portion of it, should have ordered more :(

Menu yang dipesan: Tipis Kering, Tebal, Martabak Manis

Harga per orang: Rp. 50.000 - Rp. 100.000

Bakso Akiaw 99 [ Mangga Besar, Indonesia ]

    A Must Have in Jakarta

I ordered 2 portions of Bihun Baso Sapi Spesial (dry vermicelli with beef meat, offal, balls in house special broth/soup) from @basoakiaw_99 for take away. It's sad due to health protocol, currently they are not opening their restaurant for a dine-in session.

The main reason why I love this dish is the fragrance of its broth, tastiness of its mixed meat and offal, and the springiness/chewiness of the vermicelli/rice noodles/noodles (you have to pick 1, my favourite is the vermicelli). Everything are well seasoned and gorgeous.

The vermicelli, seasoned very simply with a tad of soy sauce, sesame oil, pepper, yet tastes so yummy. Mind you the portion is kinda big, took us a while to finish a portion each. I enjoyed the vermicelli as it is, although after a few scoops I feel thirsty and that's when the broth came in handy.

Broth was neatly packed in a plastic bag, and the whole big pot was the combo of 2 soup portions. There's no way we could drink that much soup and finish the whole dish, so we drank as much broth as we need and put the rest in the fridge for boiling meat and veggies. Yes it is that tasty and worthy that I kept half a pot of it for my next meals. Tastes beefy and fragrant, with no yucky oil puddles floating on it. Seriously, the best beef noodle soup i've ever had in Indonesia. Pho Dac Biet that we had in Cabramatta, Sydney was okay but this one tastes cleaner and more pleasant.

The meat pieces and offals, 4 thumbs up for this one. Well cooked and well prepared, feels juicy in your mouth and the offals have no weird, gamey aroma. They take this beef noodle soup game seriously and as a result they have plenty of fanatic fans.

Combine the 3 elements together for your dining session, and the next thing you gotta do is be grateful for your life 😉

Menu yang dipesan: kuah, Bihun Sapi Campur, Sapi Campur, Bihun

Harga per orang: Rp. 50.000 - Rp. 100.000

Ama Taiwan Resto [ Dukuh Pakis, Taiwan ]

    Taiwanese Cuisine in Surabaya

Single photo post for today, simply because there are lotsa things happening on that day and my phone finally gave up and went to bed earlier (in simple words: died due to no battery).

AMA Taiwanese resto, is a humble food depot/small resto located inside the complex of Loop Graha Famili. Serving light taiwanese cuisine since I knew it, perhaps circa 2015? @chrisongkoo knows it better since he introduced me to this place. Price and portion size is alright, and you can sense the pork in your dishes.

We ordered Mie Lu Rok (noodle topped with minced pork - a Taiwanese staple), chicken karaage, Taiwanese Pork Sausage, and a serve of veggie (steamed chinese cabbage with a dollop of minced braised pork).

I can't say this is a cheap meal, but I can defo say this is a decent meal for its price. The taste reminds me of Cho Dumpling, a taiwanese restaurant in Sydney, Aussie, with their signature taiwanese fried chicken pieces and side dishes. Maybe I'll drop by to give them a visit later when the border reopens.

Springy noodle with sweet and savoury, slightly creamy minced pork topping. Crunchy yet pleasantly soft chinese cabbage, firm, juicy and chunky taiwanese pork sausage, and crunchy karaage. What a combo of texture and flavour, creating a burst of flavour in your mouth. AFAIK, this is the only Taiwanese restaurant in Western Surabaya. Give this place a visit if you wanna try an authentic taiwanese taste.

PS: some of the menu items description and writings on their posters are not even grammatically correct (Indonesian), making it clear that the owner is a Taiwanese.

Menu yang dipesan: Mie Lu Rok

Harga per orang: Rp. 50.000 - Rp. 100.000

Soto Podjok Kediri [ Lakarsantri, Indonesia ]

    Favourite Breakfast Spot

A brekkie session to start a beautiful day at @soto_podjokcitraland . Been a while since we had this session, there was a time where we had brekkie at this place on almost every day.

We had the soto and lots of side dishes, as you can see on the 2nd pic. Soto is basically a traditional Indonesian chicken soup dish, clear broth and tastes comforting. Have it with a squeeze of fresh lime juice and a dollop of chilli sauce, give it a good stir, let the rice soak up those broth and off you go for a treat.

The reason why I ordered so many side dishes is because, well I can. Seriously, have a visit by yourself and you'll understand why you could never simply come here and just have a bowl of Soto. You gotta have those skewers (beef tendon and braised quail eggs. Yum), freshly fried crunchy stuffed tofu (stuffed with veggies and glass noodle, dipped in batter then deep fried), apem pisang (local banana pastry), and a pack of pork and shrimp shiumai/dimsim. They still have the chunkiness of pork in it, love it.

Yeah we (mostly I) finished all of those food, what a good start of a beautiful morning.

    Gotri [ Sukolilo, Indonesia ]

Delightful Nasi Bakar and Refreshing Ice Bowls

Another busy day that requires quick, proper lunch in the hustle bustle city of Surabaya. The car's MID showed that it's 34 Degree Celsius outside, so the idea of having lunch at @gotri.id and their shaved ice got me excited for this short break.

I ordered Nasi Bakar Ayam Pete, the one on special on that day, and Es Nona. They have 5 options of this ice bowl, and all of them are equally good. I was simply trying each and every one of them every time I came to have my meal at Gotri, and to this day I haven't been able to try all of them (I lost count tbh, couldn't take a proper note on what i've tried 😂)

The Nasi Bakar is actually a portion of fried rice wrapped in banana leaves and got grilled on the spot to infuse those natural banana leaf fragrance to the fried rice. As a result, you have a dish that tastes like no other, unique to this restaurant. The fried rice itself tastes nice, grains of charred stir-fried rice, not clumpy, tossed with pieces of chicken and pete (stink beans/sator beans). Served with pieces of fried tofu, tempeh, and crackers to complete your meal.

Now the Es Nona. What I love about those ice bowls/bingsoo in this place is their colourful jelly on top of their shaved ice. It's just so appealing and looks good, enticing me to keep on ordering one of them everytime I dropped by to visit. The price tag was appealing too so I have no reason to skip them. Es Nona comes loaded with those colourful jelly, palmfruit pieces (kolang-kaling) --> good for your digestion, pineapple pieces for that refreshing zing, and syrup + condensed milk above the shaved ice. What I don't like is the shaved ice isn't actually well-shaved, it's more like crushed ice. Took a while for it to melt down, and for me who can turn impatient sometimes, this is annoying.

Nevertheless, it doesn't affect my enjoyment of this Ice Bowls, love the combination of sweet and refreshing flavours. Would have them anytime to complete my meal, no questions asked.

Menu yang dipesan: Finished!, Es Nona, Nasi Bakar Ayam Pete

Harga per orang: Rp. 50.000 - Rp. 100.000

Ayam Goreng Nelongso [ Mulyorejo, Indonesia ]

    Heat Up Your Life

We needed a quick easy (and cheap) lunch during our daytime job, and since we were around Mulyosari area (Eastern Surabaya) and starving as hell, we'd basically eat anything in front of us, McDonald's was our go-to option yet the banner of @ayamnelongso @ayamnelongso.surabaya convinced us to go into its restaurant.

They have this wonderful promo of Bebek Se'i for 22k, basically it's fried smoked duck. For 22k? It's a no-brainer to have it. I also ordered mushroom fritter on the side and my mate @chrisongkoo got us a few McD's spicy chicken bites.

The selling point of this restaurant, for me, is its free flow house-made sambal section. If you love and are able to gobble up spicy sambal and are adventurous, you'll love it. I had their young mango sambal (sambal pencit), anchovy sambal (sambal teri), and salted shrimp sambal (sambal rebon). All of them are equally good with their own unique characteristics. Those sambal on the mushroom fritters? Called Sambal Korek. A mixture of chilli, garlic, onion, and oil. Yum-yum

A portion of Bebek Se'i consists of the duck, 2 pieces of fried tofu, a serving of veggie (stir-fried morning glory/tumis kangkung), and a dollop of Sambal Kemangi (Basil Leaf Sambal). The sambal tastes great, leaning towards Sweet spectrum. The basil leaves make it a bit aromatic, just nice. The duck, although a bit dry, yet is smoky and flavourful, love it. Have them with the fritters for some extra texture.

What's not on the pic was, prior to our meal being served, I had a few packs of kerupuk kampung (local crackers/chips) and had them dipped into those free flow sambals I mentioned earlier. It was the most fantastic and flavourful chips and dips I've ever had.

Worth that burning sensation when I pee the next day.

Imperial Kitchen & Dimsum [ Wiyung, China ]

    Dim Sum.

Yumcha date with my lovely sis @joshadeline on a bright Sunday arvo. A sudden desire to have some hargows and shiumais (hakau + siomay) led us to @imperialkitchenid Pakuwon Mall.

Honestly? Disappointed. Price-wise still okay given the fact that it's operating in a prestigious mall in Surabaya, rent and stuff gotta be covered right. Not to mention Overhead Costs of materials, employee wages and everything. I don't mind paying top dollars (oops. Top Rupiahs, now) for top quality foods, but this one was not worth my dimes.

Dumplings are bland. Lacks the wow factor I used to get from this restaurant. When you guys started as a small stall in Studio Food Court of Supermall Pakuwon Indah, your food tastes better, dude. Please don't lower your standard just because you can afford to sell your food and service at a more prestigious place, hence you don't do quality check as thorough as you used to be. Go have a taste at another restaurant for your benchmark. You guys went this far already, please keep those qualities up and maintained.

The salted egg yolk buns. Overcooked. The custard is supposed to be runny and flowing, not rock-solid and eggy like the one I had. Picture attached. Oh c'mon. You can do better than this, folks.

On a bright note, I liked that tofu sheet roll with soy sauce, both the wrappers and fillings are pleasant, proving me that you guys can actually craft and serve great food, a little bit of slacking behind is acceptable, as long as you guys understand what happened and plan to tackle the problems.

Resto Tong Tong Japan [ Dukuh Pakis, Jepang ]

    Authentic Japanese Food

Been a while since my last visit to @tongtong_restaurant for their authentic japanese cuisine, of course it's been tailored a bit to suit the taste of the locals, but nevertheless it still is a champion to my tastebuds compared to other japanese restaurants in town.

Stir-fried Shirataki Noodles, both deep fried and pan-fried gyoza, and chicken karaage for that night's meal. Shirataki noodles because we just finished our swimming session hence to make me feel less guilty, I opted for the shirataki noodles. Said it contains only a little bit of calories, add in a few other ingredients, oil, etc. Yet still I believe it contains less calories than other dishes (I'm just comforting myself, I know).

Those gyozas, pan-fried and deep fried, are equally good. Filling has more texture than what we had at @rayjinbali a few posts ago, equally good and satisfying. Dip them in the free flow condiments of chilli oil, chilli powder, black vinegar, and you're in for a treat.

Chicken karaage was juicy on the inside, nothing wrong with it, just I don't feel like having lots of fritters on that day. Rinse them off with a sip of soda water since there's no sparkling water on the menu.

Price-wise, this restaurant is not well-known for its cheap price. There's a premium you gotta pay for such meticulous dishes, but hey when it comes to great things in life, they all have their own price tags that we gotta pay right? It's not a sin to charge a premium if you could walk your talk, if your dishes are equally as good as your pricetags, or even better. If not, referring to my previous post, rethink everything over and act fast to save your business, or simply be overconfident and watch it sink underwater.

Menu yang dipesan: Stir Fried Shirataki, Chicken karaage, Deep Fried Gyoza, pan fried gyoza, Finished!

Harga per orang: Rp. 50.000 - Rp. 100.000

    My Kopi-O! [ Wiyung, Kafe ]

    Quick Nibbles

Early dinner with my lovely sis @joshadeline and mate @chrisongkoo at @mykopio Pakuwon Mall/Supermall Pakuwon Indah, kinda miss their chicken wings and salted egg tofu, reminiscing the good (yet full of anxiety) ol' days.

Korean and Spicy Japanese chicken wings, salted egg tofu, Grilled Saba/Mackerel on rice was the pick of the day, enough to share for 3. You might think I've ordered too much but trust me, it's not. In fact I felt like I ordered too little of their chicken wings.

The chicken wings still taste like the way I knew them, crunchy battered skin and moist + juicy meat, although it leans toward the dry side this time, but still forgivable. Smothered in their Sweet (Honey, maybe?) Korean and Spicy Japanese (Sweet and Spicy) special sauce, it's literally finger lickin' good and won't let you stop reaching the plate for more chicken wings goodness. Worth the effort deboning and sucking on every single piece of bones.

The salted egg tofu, sounds like a simple dish but not every restaurant can pull this off. I love the creaminess of the salted egg sauce that beautifully coat those crunchy yet airy fried tofu pieces. A must-order menu item every time I drop @mykopio a visit.

Grilled Saba on rice, was actually good. Never been a big fan of fish myself but this one convinced me that my belief is a few percent incorrect. Grilled to perfection with crispy charred salty skin, flaky meat with well-rendered fat, combined with some sort of teriyaki sauce and caramelized onion, pieces of veggies making this dish a good option if you feel like you can't have a meal without rice, and when you want to feel less guilty with the chicken wings fiesta. Of course since the fish contains a buckload of nutrition, it could increase a tad more of your intelligence (results may vary depending on each individuals).

Menu yang dipesan: Grilled Saba Rice Bowl, tahu goreng telur asin, Korean Chicken Wings, Spicy Japanese Chicken Wings, Finished!

Harga per orang: Rp. 50.000 - Rp. 100.000
