4.4Ta Wan [ Beji, China ]
Chinese porridge
Hungry on a friday afternoon from campus, Ta Wan made my choice due to its low-budget and big-portion menu.
Food and beverages: 3/5
Ta Wan is a Chinese restaurant well-known for their porridge. I had their Bubur Special Tiga Rasa ala Ta Wan (their recommended dish), Bakmie Ayam Jamur, Bakmie Goreng Ayam, for greens Kailan Cah Bawang Putih, and Sweet Iced Tea. Starting out with Bubur Special Tiga Rasa ala Ta Wan, the porridge itself is quite bland, it’s better to mix it with salty soy sauce and pepper. “Tiga rasa” which translates into “three flavors” referred to the toppings on the porridge: fish, chicken, and shrimp. They could be more generous on these meats since the porridge was so big. All three were tender. Bakmie Ayam Jamur I had here somehow was different than the one I had in Citos. It was more greasy and the broth was more oily, but the noodle was still on point and the chicken and mushroom bits were plenty. Bakmie Goreng Ayam was too sweet, somehow creamy, as if they put too much soy sauce and seasoning in it. Kailan Cah Bawang Putih had a bitter aftertaste but it was quite savory. Their iced tea had a distinctive Chinese-tea flavor to it. All in all it was quite alright.
Price: 4/5
The price is quite low but their portion is generous. Bubur Special Tiga Rasa ala Ta Wan (large) costed IDR 26k, Bakmie Ayam Jamur IDR 26k, Bakmie Goreng Ayam IDR 30k, Kailan Cah Bawang Putih IDR 33k, and Sweet Iced Tea IDR 9k each. Their portion and budget covers up the average taste.
Ambience: 3/5
Located in the ground floor of Margo City, this place is quite strategic, considering tons students around the area. Minimum decorations. All-wood setting, tables and chairs. Spacious place, large round tables are available for family dining.
Service: 4/5
Waiter was very friendly. Always smiling and repeated my order without me having to ask.
Highlight: cheap food with large portion and near from campus! Try their porridge, it’s quite good.Menu yang dipesan: Iced Tea, Bakmie Goreng Ayam, Bubur Tiga Rasa ala Ta Wan, bakmie ayam jamur, Kailan Cah Bawang Putih

3.8Freeze [ Beji, Es Krim ]
Fire breathing cookies?!
Ever heard of the famous dragon cookies? It was pretty popular circa 2013. What's so unique about this is that when we bite into it, smoke billows out of our mouth - kinda like when you breathe in a super cold weather.
Food and beverages: 4/5
Freeze is actually an ice cream shop - liquid nitrogen induced ice cream; but I've never actually tried their ice cream. I've always fancied the dragon cookies (famous amos cookies or oreo mixed with liquid nitrogen) more. They make it like this; first they put the cookies inside a bowl and then pour liquid nitrogen on it, mix it together and then the cookies will be put on a tissue and the remaining liquid nitrogen will be poured on it. It was served cold as ice and quite hard to bite. The fun part: when you bite, clouds of smoke from the liquid nitrogen come out as if you're a dragon - hence the name.
Pricing: 4.5/5
I don't know about the ice cream but dragon cookies/oreo is reasonably priced: only IDR 5k/each.
Ambience: -/5
Located in food court, has no special seatings. Easy to spot with its neon signage.
Service: -/5
Orders are made freshly and we can see the fascinating process live!

4.2Chatime [ Beji, Bubble Tea ]
Affordable refreshing drinks
Chatime will always be one of my first options on a sunny day or when I’m not that hungry but extra thiiirsty. They offer a wide range of drink selections from tea, coffee, to juice.
Food and beverage: 3.5/5
I had Matcha Mousse (less ice, normal sugar) and Hazelnut Chocolate Milk Tea (with Pearl, normal ice, normal sugar). Matcha mousse was refreshing and pleasant. Although a little too watery, the green tea taste was still distinctive and fits together with the cream. I put a small tear on the rim to drink this rather than mixing it and using a straw. Hazelnut Chocolate Milk Tea, has been my Chatime go-to drink since god knows how long and never fails to satisty! It was chocolate sweet with a hint of hazelnut and the pearl had the right texture that complimented the drink so well.
Price: 4/5
Very affordable, drinks were worth the price. It costed IDR 23k for regular Matcha Mousse and IDR 26k for Hazelnut Chocolate Milk Tea with Pearl topping.
Ambience: 3/5
Located in the foodcourt, Chatime doesn’t offer its own seating. The line is most probably always full, no matter the time of day. Very easy to spot, just to the left of the elevator.
Service: 4/5
Doesn’t take long for the drinks to be served.

3.2Warkop Cumlaude [ Beji, Kafe ]
Work work work
For UI students that reside in Kutek (Kukusan Teknik) area, you must be quite familiar with this place. Looks like a very large hut from the outside, this place can occupy dozens.
Food and beverages: 2.5/5
The menu ranges from instant food to "sushi", "ramen", and toast. They also offer a variety of coffee but I was never tempted to try. The last time I came here I had my usual Indomie Kuah Susu (instant noodle with milk soup) with additional topping of chilli, cheese, egg, and corned beef; Butter Rice with Corned Beef, Iced Milo, and Iced Cappuccino. Indomie Kuah Susu tasted great for a rainy day. It might look yucky but for me it was savory and better than regular Indomie. The milk soup was a little too watery, hence the flavor dissipates a bit. Butter rice was basically white nasi goreng, rice fried with butter and mixed with corned beef and egg. It was so-so but quite fulfilling. Both milo and iced cappuccino still had too much ice although I asked for less ice. I never tried the rest of the menu since they weren't promising.
Pricing: 5/5
Very cheap! Appropriate for student's pocket. Indomie Kuah Susu with chilli, cheese, egg, and corned beef costs IDR 18k, Butter Rice with Corned Beef IDR 14k, Iced Milo IDR 6.5k, and Iced Cappuccino IDR 5k. Since the taste is not that good, the pricing was reasonable. One thing that amazes me: they accept debit cards!
Ambience: 3/5
Large space with high ceiling and hut-themed with wooden-mat walls and wooden tools and tables, this place ain't the cosiest place you'll encounter. But there's WiFi with relatively strong connection and opens til late, suitable for students to do their work while having a discussion. There are large tables, small tables, and floor-sitting option. There is no air con, but there are fans all around. Almost every table is provided with power sockets. The lighting is quite dim though, makes your eyes hurt a little. They play music here but the volume isn't bothersome. This place is indeed intended for students. Crowded at night both weekdays and weekends.
Service: 3/5
Waiters and waitresses were new and not that skilful. Here, you pick up the menu from cashier, order and pay right away. Then you pick up a number and they will bring your orders to you.
Highlight: Indomie Kuah Susu for a rainy day. Large place for group work and discussion!Menu yang dipesan: indomie kuah susu, Butter rice, Milo, Capuccino

2.8McDonald's [ Cinere ]
Panas Special
Went here to accompany my boyfriend with his final year project since this place opens 24h. Expected to have their apple pie and try their matcha top but let down miserably since they were out of stock and would only be available at 11 am the next day.
Food and beverages: 3/5
I initially wanted their apple pie (I've tried one before in Malaysia and it was delicious, crispy on the outside and ooey gooey warm goodness inside) but sadly like I said, there was none left. I wanted to try the matcha top and it was gone too. I couldn't hide my disappointment as I settled with large French Fries, Cone Ice Cream, Oreo McFlurry, Spicy Chicken Balls and Paket Panas Spesial substituting iced lemon tea with milo (my go-to). Fortunately the fries were still warm when I received them or else I would've went home. I like to mix fries with the ice cream, you should try it! Weirdly good. There wasn't much oreo in the McFlurry although they did stir it up well. Spicy Chicken Balls was so-so. My favorite would be Paket Panas Special. It consisted of rice, one piece of chicken, scrambled eggs, and a drink of your choice (some drink you need to cash up in terms of subtituting from iced lemon tea). I love their scrambled eggs with extra salt.
Price: 4/5
Very affordable. Portion is moderate. Food is parallel with the price. Large French Fries costs about IDR 19k, Cone Ice Cream IDR 6k, Oreo McFlurry IDR 10K, Paket Panas Special IDR 35k, and Spicy Chicken Balls IDR 10K.
Ambience: 3/5
Like any other McD stalls, the outlet is dominated by red, yellow, and white. There is a choice of outdoors (smoking) and indoors (non-smoking) and this McD is relatively large. It could probably fit around 50+ people here. Kid-friendly since they provide a children's playground section. Options of sofa/bar/regular sitting, WiFi, many power sockets are available throughout. The downside is that the floor is always dirty.
Service: 3/5
Their drive-thru is almost always packed, therefore staffs here tend to neglect customers that lined up the regular cashier. I had to wait 20 minutes before it was my turn although there were only 2 people in front of me. Even then when they took my order, they were still occupied by the drive-thru. Needs to hire more staff. There's this one worker, I don't know his name but he deserves a recognition. He dressed in security outfit but initiated and helped clean the table up by himself. He helped me set aside the empty cups and platter without asking.
Highlight: try the french fries with cone ice cream. Thank me later😜Menu yang dipesan: Paket Panas Special, Cone Ice Cream, Oreo mcflurry, Spicy Chicken Balls

4.2Sushi Tei [ Beji, Jepang ]
Famed sushi available in Depok
The famed sushi establishment has finally opened in Depok! You can easily find this restaurant all over Jakarta and now Depok residents can finally get their hands on without having to drive all the way to the capital city. Sushi Tei has always been my go-to if I want sushi. Located in Margo City, 1st Floor, this place is easy to spot, just at the right side of the escalator, replacing a part of Toko Gunung Agung.
Food and Beverages: 4.5/5
For this visit we had Salmon Cha Soba, Crispy Cheese Roll, Baked Salmon Maki, Salmon Temaki, Cold Ocha, and Hot Ocha. My current favorite dish is Salmon Cha Soba. Cold soba (green noodle) was arranged in three swirls topped with half-baked salmon, mayonnaise, and tobikko; complemented with aqueous soy sauce, scallion, and seaweed in one serving. The soba itself is quite plain but combined with everything, it turned into one tastebud-satisfying dish! The salmon was tender and fresh, it was the perfect combination. Crispy cheese roll and baked salmon maki were good, nothing special. Salmon temaki was refreshing. Both ochas were refillable. Everything we ordered were satisfying. Always leave in happy tummy.
Pricing: 4/5
High quality sushi with affordable price! I only spent IDR 170k for two this visit and overall everything is not overpriced. Love!
Ambience: 4/5
I came here late December and by then it was still newly opened. Like all Sushi Tei joints, I was waitlisted but it didn’t take long until I was seated. Decorated with the same template with other japanese outlets, wooden tables and chairs, sofa seatings, and bar stools.
Service: 3/5
The service here was quite bad! I had to push the waiter button several times before one actually tend to my table. Salmon Cha Soba came so late - it came after we finished the rest of the food. I was seated in a small table and when the customer next to me vacated, I wasn’t allowed to move to a bigger table although there weren’t any new customers. It was clear that they were overwhelmed.
Highlight: If you’re feeling out of your comfort zone, try Salmon Cha Soba! Its unique taste will surprise you.🍜Menu yang dipesan: Salmon Cha Soba, Baked Salmon Maki, Crispy Cheese Roll
