    Miyagi [ Karet Kuningan, Jepang ]

    It's Sushi Time!

    Many thanks to my friends for their post-defense treat, here we are in Miyagi---already craving for its Sushi Frenzy. What comes up in many people's mind about Miyagi is that it does provide sushi at lower prices, but no, no, no. Its food quality can keep abreast with more popular Jap-food chains (e.g. Sushi T**).
    Some sushis we ordered here included Miyagi Maki (Omellete Sushi with Thousand Island), Salmon Cheese Aburi Maki and Ebi Tempura Maki. Bearing the bistro's name, Miyagi Maki---I personally think---is absolutely the crème de la crème (Really delicious especially when you add some Shoyu: it becomes perfect). The second is decent with the salmon really well-cooked and the cheese nicely melted. The last one is just fine for me.
    Adding even more to the list, we ordered Tori Karaage Salad & Chicken Katsu Curry Rice. I am not a fan of salad but yes the vegetables are really fresh with nice dressing. The curry rice is also in fact satisfying (recommended for sharing). Plus, the specialty drinks  may deserce your attention: Himawari Tea is more to the sour-sweet one; Haruki Tea is a bit gingerish with a tad sweetness (All are great!).
    Ambience is quite cozy to stay rather longer and service is indeed commendable--quick and smooth.
    Overall, I can say price may just sometimes lie and Miyagi is one existent proof.

    Platinum [ Sudirman, Indonesia,Barat ]

    Masih OK, tapi ada satu masalah.

    Platinum, salah satu restoran yang sudah ada sejak saya masih kecil hingga saat ini, dan bisa jadi alternatif yang pas kalau mau makan enak dengan banyak variasi tanpa ngerogoh kocek yang banyak.
    Kali ini, saya sendiri coba pesan Grilled Chicken-nya (37k++) dan menurut saya, untuk harga segitu agak below the standard yah. Ayam-nya is really ordinary (BBQ sauce-nya gak nolong), tofu fixingnya almost tasteless, I think. Mungkin memang salah pesan, karena saya cukup suka dengan beberapa menu lainnya sperti teppanyaki.
    Namun, saya dan teman-teman saya agak kecewa dengan satu hal sih. So, saat mau ngecek bill,  tagihan kami kena 20%, 10% itu tax (normal), 10% itu surcharge (yup, 10% kayak service charge in hotel restaurants) tanpa prior notice. Surcharge ini temporary, alasannya karena 'kebutuhan bahan pokok lagi pada naik', makanya kenalah 10% for whatever you order even if it's only drinks. To some extent, understandable, but it may be displeasing for some patrons.
    Is this a common practice already?

    Bakmi Aheng (MIMING) [ Glodok, China ]

    Masih Lumayan Lah!

    Lagi iseng cari makan malam di daerah Kemurnian, ketemulah Bakmi Aheng yang memang selalu terlihat ramai. Cabang Bakmi Aheng yang satu ini bukan yang di Hayam Wuruk, tapi yang ada di pertigaan Kemurnian (berhubung belum ad di PerKul). Tanpa ngecek harga, langsunglah saya memesan dua porsi untuk take-away.
    Satu porsi dengan harga 22k karena bakminya memakai daging ayam kampung selain ayam cincang. Tekstur bakminya sendiri tipis namun kenyal, dan rasanya? Well, enak sih tapi rasa gak bisa dibilang spesial banget. Yang cukup surprisingly good itu kuahnya--bener-bener berasa kaldu ayamnya. Disini juga sedia bakso goreng yang denger-denger lumayan ngagetin mahalnya, 😅
    Overall sih, quite a good choice tapi gak bakal sering-sering banget makan bakmi harga segini. Lumayan ngerogoh dompet soalnya untuk sebungkus bakmi ayam.

    Joni Steak [ Gajah Mada, Barat ]

    Decent steaks with low price!

    Talking about inexpensive steak cuts, one may agree that Joni Steak can be one of the quite preferable options. Of course, given the price, don't expect any meat of real prime quality. But don't falter as JS still serves steaks with decent taste and portion.
    I ordered its medium-well Tenderloin Steak (70k++) with Go-Food and what I received in hand was not disappointing. The meat was tender and in fact not chewy as usually anticipated from 'cheap' steaks, and it's well complemented by nicely baked potato wedges. My major complaint was with the veggie fixing--carrots were still darn hard (it feels like biting frozen choco bar).
    Overall, though not a choice for really great steaks, JS is where you'd go on a tight budget.

    Dunkin' Donuts [ Slipi, Donat ]

    Balik Lagi!

    Sudah sangat lama tidak membeli doughnuts dari Dunkin Donuts franchise dan yes, akhirnya coba 'kembali lagi' karena ada promo Buy 6 Get 6 dari L*NE. Kalau normalnya, harga 1/2 dozen classic donuts itu sudah 62k (incl. tax), lumayan pricey dibandingkan competitors yang lain. Yang fancy doughnuts bisa lebih mahal lagi tentunya (14.5k each)
    Untuk doughnuts-nya sendiri, pilihan variants lumayan banyak walaupun I feel that 50% or so itu didominasi oleh chocolate with its assorted variations: Triple chocolate, white chocolate, choco meses, peanut choco, and so on. Untuk yang non-chocolate, ada flavor seperti Matcha, Srikaya, Hazelnut, Mint, Lemon, etc. Teksturnya sendiri compact dan gak kempes. Manisnya juga gak overwhelming.

    Thai Xtreme [ Slipi, Thailand ]

    Comfort food at its finest!

    I always have a penchant for any sorts of food with bold spices, and this Yellow Chicken Laksa from Thai Xtreme does deserve a round of praise. In one bowl of Laksa, you'll get some chicken and potato chunks, thick-texture noodles, tofu blocks and of course its yellow gravy which is always the highlight of this kind of food.
    Claimed to be Thai Laksa, its structure and taste are quite similar to Malay Curry Laksa but with a bit tinge of sourness. I can say that it reminds me of Gulai Ayam that my parents used to cook but stronger. The first time you spoon it, you may feel this tingling sensation in your throat due to the spices used. Also, you'll notice that it's quite viscous, thanks to the coconut milk used. Quite a perfect match for my Asian tastebud.
    One note though: the curry pe se is not well absorbed by the chicken meat, which is unfortunate, IMO.
    Anyway, service is decent with swift response from the waiters/waitresses. And ambience and decoration are also pleasant to eyes with many Buddha-related statues here and there.
    Price is above the average, but it's surely worth it!

    Saine Daise [ Pantai Indah Kapuk, Barat ]

    Umami (n.): a taste sensation that is meaty and savory

    This one word can indeed represent best almost all the dishes served in Sainé Daise. Situated on the upper floor above EIO Patisserie (both are of the same group), this semi fine-dining eatery serves fusion cuisine, some of which you may never find in any other restaurants.
    All of the superb dishes are purely the creation of the owners and below are my personal hall of fame for the dishes
    1. Umami Bowl

    This is the main reason why I mentioned Umami at the first place. Prawn, red cheddar, tobiko, honey Ponzu, and so forth makes up this bowl of heavenly savoriness.
    2. Sainé Daise Gyudon

    A bowl of rice topped with chargrilled wagyu and beautiful sunny side-up. Mix them up before taking a spoon and once it enters your mouth, you won't resist how flavorful it is. Not an ordinary Gyudon Bowl!
    3. Ami Ebi Angelhair

    Though not with a lot of fixings, Ami Ebi Angelhair still becomes everyone's favorite. Its modest taste turns out to be quite addicting, and we can't agree more on this.
    4. Chargrilled Wagyu Rib Eye

    Tender Wagyu with bacon-filled mashed potatoes--another prime choice should you crave for meaty sensation.
    Other food that you might be intrigued to order are Marinated Black Cod (Fish of top-notch quality), Truffle Pasta, Onion Soup, Mixed Garden Salad and Fried Lotus.
    One thing to bear in mind: don't expect to be full just by eating one dish as Sainé Daise prioritizes the patron's culinary experience instead of generous portion.

    EIO Patisserie [ Pantai Indah Kapuk, Toko Kue ]

    Cheese, Chocolate or Neither? All are here!

    Looking for anti-mainstream cakes or cookies that you will scarcely find in any other pattiseries? If so, EIO Patisserie is surely the place you might wanna drop by. It serves numerous one-of-a-kind cakes of top-notch quality as well as some commonly well-known choices like cheesecake. Plus, expensive as it might seem, you won't regret what you spend here as it's really about quality over quantity.
    I'd point out just some desserts in the photos that I find quite memorable:
    1. Yuzu Crémeux (55k) --> A soft (but not creamy) 'pudding-like' dessert made from Yuzu orange topped with fresh sunkist and sprinkled with almonds below.



    2. Cheese Fruit Tart (150k)  -->  Raspberries stacked over compact cheese layers on a graham cracker--worldly heaven for cheese lovers. No wonder this becomes one of EIO best-selling cakes.
    3. Valrhona Chocolate Mousse (55k)

    Not really into cheese? Touché, that's where you may want to try its chocolate mousse. There is this bitter sweet sensation of the choco, making you want for more.
    4. Chocolate Avocado Mousse

    Avocado+Chocolate Ice Cream--I am drooling remembering its perfect melange.
    5. Frozen Smores (50k)

    I missed this one, but with all other great cakes, this one is without doubt as great as the others.
    There are also other honorable mentions including EIO signature cake, the almond cookies (much better than SBY-style ones), Rose cookies (Made from real rose petals, it's so fragrant you may think, "Does someone actually spray some perfume on it?"), and selections of cheesecake (i.e. light or strong--you decide).
    Elaborate as it is, you really still have to come by and taste them yourself. No regrets guaranteed!
    n.b. Many of the cakes here are not overwhelmingly sweet, but trust me, that's what makes them special

    Yakitori Box [ Gandaria, Jepang ]

    It's indeed our #SATAYFACTION!

    Japanese cuisine has been thriving with numerous delicacies widespread across Jakarta. One of the popular snacks is Japanese-style satay called Yakitori. Yakitori Box, after its first branch in Standard Chartered Building (Karet), is now ready to serve you its arrays of Yakitoris in Gandaria City, LG. And yes, my title above says it all: totally satisfied!
    I was glad to be invited to its soft launching on June 9 along with other foodies. This branch may look not so spacious--if not cramped, which you can simply overlook given all the nicely drawn murals, not to mention of course the food.
    We were served one of its premium bentos (Bento D) comprised of Chicken Thigh, Chicken Ball, Tofu Skin Roll and Salmon (or add 10.000 for Unagi) + free Ocha along with some a la carte yakitoris. Undeniably, the succulent Unagi is perhaps everyone's favorite here, but the other satays do deserve praise.
    Plus, beyond everything is the Kietshu Sauce coating all yakitoris before they are grilled---nicely sweet, savory and well-absorbed. The rice, claimed to be authentically Japanese, is also delicious though served with only small portion, I guess. Price is wise as most satays cost around 10k or so each (not for Salmon/Unagi).
    Service is swift, but be reminded that Yakitori Box adopts self-service concept, so put away your dishes once finished to the provided place.
    All said, why not give it a try? It may turn out that you won't go home before you're fully stuffed, 😉😉😉

    Fubar [ Gajah Mada, China ]

    Just the attitude, please!

    Fubar Restaurant, conveniently located in the Candra Naya Complex around Novotel Hotel Gajah Mada, indeed manages to maintain its ambience and look as an authentic Chinese bar. Chinese murals, paintings, decorations, furniture--all perfectly contributes to the coziness.
    The food? Well, I ordered its lunch package, Nasi Ayam Fubar (Rp29.000++), and the first thing that enticed me was its much fragrant aroma, not to mention its tempting chicken meat simmered in some sauce. And yes, how it looks didn't betray its taste--much rich with its typical Chinese flavor.
    One thing though that irritated me was the waitress. When I entered the restaurant, no one was on stand-by to serve the menu. Above all, smiling seemed to be the most difficult thing to do for the waitress.
    With all said, as this was my first time, a comeback is surely a yes.
