    Ruth Chris

A pretty well known chain steakhouse from New Orleans, Ruth’s Jakarta is located in the same building as Somerset apartment. Used to be one of my go to place for steak, but feels like the quality has gone down in my last visit. Perhaps the pandemic has impacted their quality?
    📍Kuningan
    Taste 6/10
    Service and Ambiance 8/10

    🐈Try if curious

    Petite Fillet 6oz (500k) 4.5/10
Pretty much the only cut I ever ordered in Ruth. I ordered this in rare but arrived more like medium well? Petite fillet is quite lean so overcooking make it quite tough. Meat was off this time around, being quite tough to chew, with lots of fibrous texture. Very disappointed as their quality used to be consistent.

    Ribeye 16oz (880k) 6.5/10
Much juicier due to having higher fat:meat ratio, but not as buttery as expected despite being cooked at rare. Suitable for sharing as it’s quite big. Fatty cuts aren’t my cup of tea though, and this definitely had chunks of fatty layer.

    Mashed Potatoes (130k) 5/10
Standard mashed potato. It’s an okay side. Kinda too bland for my liking.

    Potato Au Gratin (130k) 6.5/10
Like this over the mashed potato since the potato had more structure while still being creamy. The broiled cheese on top was nice as well.

    Chocolate Molten Cake (170k) 6.5/10
The largest lava cake I’ve ever ordered. IRL it’s even bigger than the picture. Taste wise it’s just okay, cake was moist and fluffy enough, but missing the molten inside. Ice cream also tasted basic, and the sauce drizzled on top was very, very sweet.

    Chocolate Sin Cake (130k) 7/10
Texture is very dense vs the molten cake. Much richer chocolate taste while being less sweet, which made me prefer this one. It did get a bit heavy towards the end though.

The Writers Bar - Raffles Jakarta Hotel [ Karet Kuningan, Barat ]

    Writers Bar

Located within Raffles Hotel, Writers Bar offers one of the most, if not the best, value for money when it comes to afternoon tea in Jakarta.

To make a reservation, you must put a deposit of 300k, but I don’t think that’s necessary as the place was pretty empty when my group arrived. To save up some cash, be sure to check Chope for available voucher.

The Raffles Afternoon Tea set (500k for 2 pax) is enough for 3-4 persons (we were a group of three and couldn’t finish it off), offering full portion sizes of sandwiches, scones, and cakes compared to the bite-sized pieces offered by similar venues in town.

We started with the savoury options, which included the Multigrain Grissini (thin Italian bread sticks) wrapped with smoked salmon and capers cream. Sandwiches portions were quite big, but tasted just like any other tea sandwiches elsewhere. The most interesting offering was definitely the foie gras & raspberry macaroons. The combination of sweetness and umaminess were definitely unusual, though I don’t know if I actually like the taste.

Scones texture were good, though I couldn’t really taste the orange in the scones. The orange flavoured clotted cream was surprisingly good though, with a nice kick of tang that pairs well with the jam. The cakes and tarts were decent, but can get overwhelmingly heavy after a while. Fortunately, the Guava Citrus and Pinacoco Cubes provided enough sweet-sour balance to counteract the sweetness of the other chocolate based cakes.

Tea options were not the most varied, but they had enough options beyond the usual english breakfast and early grey tea.

    Ambiance
Place was quiet and cozy. The seats were a bit uncomfortable because they were too plush. Tables were those coffe tables that are too low for you to eat foods.

    Service
Servers were friendly, but it can be difficult to get their attention

Zoku Dine & Bar [ Pantai Indah Kapuk, Jepang ]

    Zoku

    Kombunara (130k) 6/10
The main star of the show😗. A somewhat similar dish to carbonara with a Japanese take, Zoku used wide egg noodle with scallop, kombu butter sauce, onsen egg, tobiko, and furikake. Noodle texture was on point, but still somewhat lacking in flavour. Scallops were kinda small, especially compared to the generous amount of noodle. Maybe a better ratio of protein-sauce-noodles would help to elevate the dish?

    Salmon Crispy Sushi (70k) 6/10
Salmon aburi served on fried anchovy rice, topped with egg salad and pickled kyuri. I enjoyed the crunchy rice texture, but couldn’t really taste the anchovy flavour. In fact, the rice tasted bitter as they were way too charred. The egg salad and pickles did provide interesting texture and balanced flavour to the overall dish though. Just a decent appetiser for me.

    Claypot Rice (195k) 4.5/10
Rice served with wagyu fat, calamari, and shiitake mushrooms. I was expecting a flavourful claypot rice based on the description, especially with the inclusion of kombu stock and bone marrow. However, even after being mixed in, I could not taste the bone marrow. It’s also missing that famous ‘kerak’ you would expect on the bottom of such dish. Overall, this dish was just lacking in flavour.

    📍PIK 2, North Jakarta
    🐈 5.5/10

I think they are still getting the hang of things as they just recently opened. Will revisit once everything settles as the other dishes such as Asian PB&J and Potato Churros sound interesting.

Wabi Sabi [ Setiabudi, Jepang ]

    Wabi Sabi

Visited early this year when they recently opened. Had high expectations of the place as I’ve always had positive experience with the other MD Plaza’s restaurants.

    Duck Duck Foie (175 k) 7.5/10
One of the highly raved dish from Wabi Sabi. Each duck egg contains tender duck meat that blends well with the seared foie gras. Chawan mushi texture was also really great, creating a rich, complex, and umami flavour. This was my friend’s favourite dish of the night. The overall combination, along with the truffle, makes this dish a flavour 💣. That being said, most of the flavour was concentrated on the top part, so towards the bottom it can get a bit bland (would recommend mixing in the chawan mushi for better flavour distribution). Overall, I did like the dish but I reckon eating more than one can be quite overwhelming🤔.

    “Tentacles” (135k) 5/10
I think we were expecting something along the lines of charred grilled octopus🐙, but it turns out to be carpaccio instead😅. The dish is served cold and with how thinly the octopus meat was sliced, it was quite difficult to pick up. The spicy vinaigrette was good though, and the meat itself didn’t taste ‘amis’. Really enjoyed the crunch of the ika geso karaage and baby kyuri as well. Would probably be better off ordering other appetiser.

    Crab Rrr-amen (255k) 7/10
Really enjoyed the richness of crustacean butter sauce.
Alaskan Snow Crab Leg was nice and flavourful, although I feel like they should increase the portion given the price they charge for this dish. Nevertheless, crab meat was tender with a nice delicate sweetness. Ramen texture was a bit too al-dente for my liking, though it did lend itself to withstand the creaminess of the dish. Good dish but nothing extraordinary.

    Canggu Bakehouse [ Thamrin, Toko Roti,Kafe ]

    Canggu Bakehouse

I’ve been meaning to visit this place for a while (but Pos Bloc is somewhat out of the way for me), so I decided to pay them a visit when I saw that they opened a second branch at Sarinah.

    Croissants
All their croissants are quite huge and surprisingly filling. Texture is somewhere in the middle of being flakey and chewy. Those of you who like your croissant super crunchy and airy will not like these. However, the thicker laminated layers actually made the croissants firmer and more substantial when you eat them. Nice buttery aroma without being too much. Good value for money compared to similar places in town.

    Canggu Boy (22k) 7/10
Their take on Mexican coffee bun in a croissant form, it reminded me very much of Roti Boy. This is the croissant I would recommend you guys try as it has the most unique flavor combination out of their pastry offerings. I like how the crisp the coffee crust was, and you can also taste the coffee without the overpowering sweetness of the original Roti Boy. They also put some salty melted butter inside that balanced out the sweet exterior. Right now, you can get Canggu Boy croissant with iced coffee for 55k.

    Matcha Latte (35k) 6/10
Surprisingly good🤩! Ordering matcha latte can be hit or miss as it really depend on the type of matcha powder used for the beverage. Fortunately, the matcha here lends a nice bitterness and aroma to the drink. Bonus point for not being too sweet.

    Ambiance 6/10
Their Sarinah location seems to be more spacious vs their Pos Bloc branch. Somewhat suitable for wfc as well, though it can get a bit noisy when the place is crowded.

Hunter and Grower [ Kemang, Kafe ]

    Hunter and Grower

Been wanting to try their vegetarian nasi campur for a while, but sadly it was out of stock during our visit. As it was during brunch time, we decided to try out both savoury and sweet option.

    Tiramisu french toast (98k) 7.5/10
If you like your brunch sweet, you’ll like this. A somewhat different take on your usual french toast, this dish used thick brioche soaked with coffee custard (might be too bitter for some folks but I like it), served with a dusting of dark cocoa powder on top. Because of this, I quite like sweetness from the sauce. Strawberry also give a nice refreshing taste for the dish (more strawberry would be nice though).

    BBQ Cauliflower (75k) 7.5/10
Grilled head of cauliflower served with BBQ sauce alongside barley and quinoa. The cauliflower was crunchy without being soggy, nicely roasted with nice char, and sauce had nice combination of tangy, spicy (beware if you can’t tolerate the heat) and sour flavour. You might think that eating cauliflower might not make you full, but the barley and quinoa really helps bulk up the meal. The red onion and radish add another layer of texture while coriander and parsley bring freshness to the dish. Overall, nice option for vegetarian.

    Ambiance 7/10
Cafe was pretty quiet, which makes it pretty wfc friendly (finding electric socket might be an issue though). They are dog friendly and has outdoor seatings available. Some of their menu are vegetarian friendly. Not a lot of parking space available.

P.S. they also share space with plant and eco-friendly goods store called plantisetjava

Sofia at The Gunawarman [ Senopati, Barat ]

    Sofia at the Gunawarman

It’s been several years since my last visit to this place. Despite the cozy ambiance and lovely design of Sofia, I’ve honestly always found their foods and afternoon tea to be overrated. Got invited to an Iftar couple of weeks ago so I’d thought to see if I like their food better this time around.

    Ravioli Truffle (190k) 4.5/10
Portion was incredibly small (I believe I got 4 raviolis) even compared to other fine dining establishment in Jakarta. Pasta skin was very dry, even after being coated with the sauce. Consistency of the sauce itself was too thick and I couldn’t really taste the truffle. Kudos for the generous and umami ravioli filling though.

    Sofia Chocolate Cake (90k) 5.5/10
Eight texture chocolate with hot chocolate sauce. This dessert was mostly mousse and way too sweet for me. I feel like the dish would have been a lot better had one of the component (the mousse or the sauce) been switched to dark chocolate, which would have brought a balanced bitterness to the dish. Texture is another issue as there is not enough crunch or firmness to counteract the softness of the mousse.

    Haus #1 (200k) 5/10
A cognac based cocktails, Haus was made in combination with ume liqueur, cherry brandy, bitters chocolate, and vanilla hints.
Very diluted cocktail, couldn’t really taste the alcohol. Much too sweet in my opinion.

    Service
I remember that service was always the highlights of my visits years ago. Sadly, that was not the case here. No greeter was stationed when I arrived there and our table had to call the servers multiple times before they noticed us. Drinks were served incredibly slow (in fact I had already finished my pasta before my drink arrived) until they offered a complementary iced teas as we waited for our drinks. Keep in mind that all of this could be because we visited during the weekend around Iftar time.

    Verdict
Go here for the ambiance, not for the food. Btw, I believe they have the most expensive iced tea in Jakarta (150k) which is cray🤣.

Caffe Milano [ Pantai Indah Kapuk, Italia ]

    Just Average

Visited PIK’s branch when they first opened and thought that the GI’s branch tasted better. Recently went back and sadly my opinion remained the same.

    Chicken Parmagiana (150k) 7/10
One of the better dish we’ve tried there. Chicken was thick and nicely fried, creating a thin yet crispy batter while keeping the meat inside juicy. Tomato sauce had a nice boldness to it that was complemented by parmigiano reggiano on top. The chicken was served with arugula, which was a good choice of greens for this dish as the slight pepperiness complement the acidity of the tonato. Fries were crunchy and had the right amount of flavours.

    Caesar Salad (120k) 6/10
Just a basic caesar salad, with slightly more generous portion of cheese vs other places. Prefer bistecca’s caesar salad over this. Quite filling from the chicken and croutons though.

    Pizza (195k) 5/10
They had a promotion of buying 1 pizza (we got the USA prime roast beef) to get 1 margherita pizza (worth 110k). Sadly, I could not really recommend the pizza here as the dough was hard to chew and taste was very bland for both pizza. The tomato sauce seemed watery and lacking that sweet-sour taste you would expect. Since it’s new on the menu, they probably still need some time to get the consistency and taste right?

    Orange Cheesecake (85k) 6/10
Nice cheesecake with your typical sweet and slightly tangy flavour. Would prefer more dominant orange notes though, as they tasted almost identical to regular cheesecake. Really enjoyed the crust, which was surprisingly my favourite part if the dessert.

    Ambiance 7/10
Really nice casual bistro vibe, with semi outdoor area that provides ample sunshine and wind while still being cozy from the AC indoor. Good place for friends or family meet ups.

    Service 6/10
Friendly staffs but somewhat hard to get their attention. Some staffs lacking in product knowledge.
