    Premium Shokupan in Jakarta

    Best shokupan I’ve tried so far in Jakarta. At 52k it’s not cheap by any means when you can get white bread pretty much anywhere nowadays, however the taste makes it worth the price imo. Very rich and even slightly cheesy, it’s good enough to eat as is or as fancy toast. Am usually more of a sourdough person but this is my pick when I want to eat softer bread. Also they cut it into different thickness (18, 28, and 38 mm) so adjust based on your use cases.

    Pison [ Thamrin, Kafe ]

    Pison

    One of my go to cafes for coffee and foods in Bali and Jakarta. Reasonable price vs similar cafes, big portions, and taste quite good. Consistent across their branches as well (though my favourite is the Ubud one).

    Brioche French Toast (70k) 7/10
    Classic french toast with bacon and maple syrup, nothing too groundbreaking vs some other frenchies but good nonetheless. Brioche was the stand out, super rich and buttery. Might be a bit too soggy for some people.

    Turkish Egg (79k) 8/10
    Poached egg served with warm greek yoghurt, chilli oil, and toast. Was surprised with the toast having cheese in the middle (and very generous amount at that). Definitely enough for sharing between 2 pax. Very garlicky, personally I like it but something you want to avoid if you have an important meeting that day😂.

    Pad Thai (80k) 7.5/10
    Rice noodle with prawns and tofu. Good options for those that prefers Asian menu. I wouldn’t say it’s authentic, however sauce was really good (adjusted to local taste), with plenty of tamarind and dash of fish sauce. Noodle was nicely cooked and the crushed peanuts on top were also super crunchy.

    Go! Go! Curry! [ Alam Sutera, Jepang ]

    Curry Jepang

    Chicken katsu curry (55k) in small size. Despite being a small, this was enough for 2 people. Katsu itself was standard (pretty thin), wish it was thicker and juicier, however the sauce is what makes this dish special. Darker and richer than most katsu curry here, there’s almost an undertone of sourness to it with good amount of spices.

    Seporsi Miekari [ Gading Serpong, Indonesia ]

    Ordered Mie Ayam Special Bara extra pedas (48k). No queue yet at around 10ish. As many reviewers have suggested, it tasted similar to indomie kari, just bolder in taste and richer in broth. All the toppings work well together, very impressed by how spicy the extra pedas was. Must have put lots of rawit as my mouth was on fire halfway through the bowl. For me, it was good experience but not something I would repurchase, much less queue for.

    Platon Coffee [ Alam Sutera, Kafe ]

    Mie Goreng (7/10)
    Compared to the hyped up mie kari, I prefer Platon’s mie goreng (same management). Tastes like mie Jawa abang-abang, with good amount of sweet soy sauce, chillies, wok hei, and bold seasoning, just maybe an additional fried egg would be nice.

    Kastangel Cake (52.5k/slice) 7/10
    Also tried a slice of cake (a pretty famous one during its time). Kastengel cake was, as the name suggest, pretty cheesy and savoury. The crumble added a nice crunchiness and gave it that signature kue kering taste, however I find that the cake itself was a bit too dry vs buttery and moist (maybe it was an old batch?).

    Diletto (38k)
    Essentially a stronger latte (double ristretto with milk). My go to when in Platon and wanted a white coffee. Quite strong caffeine kick, not acidic and not milky either. If you want the iced version, go with the corta option.

    Baby Dutch Pancake [ Pantai Indah Kapuk, Kafe ]

    Honestly foods were just decent despite the hype, surprisingly rosti>pancake for me.
    Kudos for the service though, very gercep in anticipating the guests’ needs (e.g preparing sharing plates before we asked, telling us about the tea being shareable for 2, etc.).

    Pistachio (65k) 5/10
    Thin, crispy pancakes with chocolate sauce, pistachio crumbs, and vanilla ice cream. Not a fan of the pancake texture itself, as the edges were burnt. Pretty sure I got an over-baked one.

    Beef Stroganoff Rosti (59k) 6.5/10
    Rosti itself was very good (like 8/10 for the 🥔). Crispy outside but soft inside. Unfortunately the variant I chose was pretty bad, beef was very tough and the stroganoff was bland. We ended up mostly eating the rosti on its own.

    Early March [ Cilandak, Kafe ]

    Early March Citos

    French Dip (125k) 7.5/10
    Unexpectedly prefer this vs the ox pastrami, as the rare roast beef really shone through in combination with the au jus (even if some meat parts were a bit tough). Baguette, like pretty much all breads ordered at Early March, was quite hard from being over toasted. Love the crispy onions as well!

    Profiteroles (70k) 8.5/10
    The other must have after the ricotta. Love the profiteroles with nutty-savoury pistachio ice cream and dark chocolate sauce. Again, similar to Roma’s bigne but tastier and more affordable.

    Sticky Vanilla Date Pudding (60k) 8/10
    Moist and buttery pudding with nice caramelisation and burnt sugar notes in their sauce. Wish they gave more vanilla ice cream as the pudding was very sweet on its own. Very good but I slightly prefer Loewy’s toffee pudding.

    Spaghetti (95k) 6/10
    Vongole with a twist. A polarising dish since the flavour was definitely bold from the crustacean butter and chives, however the clams were somewhat fishy. Would get this if you are a massive seafood lover, otherwise the smell might be a bit much.

    Early March [ Gandaria, Kafe ]

    Early March Gancit

    Early March in early March. It’s quite rare for me to like so many dishes from one place so will definitely go back. On the other hand, both americano and manual brew were both very acidic and over-extracted so personally wouldn’t recommend the coffee.

    Whipped Ricotta (85k) 8.5/10
    Can’t go wrong with honey and ricotta combo. The truffle was mild but still noticeable. Dare I say better than Roma’s (and cheaper too!)? Only con was sourdough too toasty and hard, it was quite tough to chew😟.

    Loaded Birria Nachos (85k) 8.5/10
    The most legit birria finding yet!Consome and avocado crema were rich snd tacos themselves were bursting with flavour. Loaded with juicy meats and very cheesy.

    Ox Tongue Pastrami Reuben (150k) 7/10
    The ox tongue got slightly overpowered by the Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and pickles, I think I prefer normal pastrami vs the ox tongue (too soft in texture). Prefer P&S version of this, as they had more reuben and sauce. The fries were excellent though.

    Ricotta & Matcha Melted Cheesecake (70k) 5/10
    It’s strange? Something about the warm, almost eggy, cheesecake combo just didn’t work with me. The matcha sauce was really hard to pick up and didn’t really go with the cheesecake.

    NAMELAKA [ Kelapa Gading, Toko Kue,Kafe ]

    Pistachio Tiramisu (90k) 9/10
    Went all the way from West Jakarta to Kelapa Gading for this🤧. Love how bold the pistachio flavour was. Pretty perfect but could do with more texture (chopped pistachio perhaps?) as the mascarpone layer was very thick vs the ladyfinger.

    Hot Chocolate: Cacao Barry Blend (50k) and Guayaquil (45k) 9.5/10
    Current favourite chocolate in town, very thick and rich. They have range of different chocolate selection. We chose the sweeter versions but they both still had a nice bitterness to it. The barry blend had a hazelnut undertone whereas the guayaquil was more acidic.

    Blossom Entremet (60k) 7.5/10
    A cny special. Unique combination of oolong tea and white peach. Really light on the palate and refreshing. The jelly and jam layers add nice zestiness.

    Strawberry Black Tea (38k) 7/10
    This one was pretty okay, bold black tea flavour with refreshing strawberry slices. Good option if you want lighter drink.

    Blue Cheese & Pear (22.5k) 8/10
    Still one of my fav choux in town and the blue cheese paired well with the pear. Sweet, salty, tangy, and creamy in one bite.

    Blossom Entremet (60k) 7.5/10
    A cny special. Unique combination of oolong tea and white peach. Really light on the palate and refreshing. The jelly and jam layers add nice zestiness.

    Golden Baileys (60k) 6.5/10
    Quite standard mix of flavours: milk & dark chocolate plus baileys put together in different layers of cream, mousse, and cake. Can’t imagine people disliking this but at the same time it’s kinda boring?
