    Pardon My French [ Menteng, Perancis,Jepang ]

    Fusion twist that surprise you

Spam and Tamago Musubi. Japanese fluffy omelette was inserted between rice and thick cut spam. The omelette was fluffy but it lacked sweetness, it's kinda bland. But, the spam was really something. Salty and savoury with great texture. The outer was a bit crisp but the middle part was soft. The cook did a great job. The ratio between the rice and the spam was kinda missed, at least for me. Look, it's like 3 : 1. It's too big and easily crumbled. There's no civilized way to eat this.

Rasane [ Green Ville, Indonesia ]

My only place to eat smoked crab

Kepiting Asap. The best smoked crab in town, you'll never find a better one. Up till now, they never fail to amaze me. I believe the best way to enjoy crab is by smoking it. Yup, black pepper or chili crab taste good, but not as good as the smoky one. It took around 30mins but it's totally worth it. The meat was lean and soft. Tender and flaky at the same time. The used banana leaf to cover the crab before they smoked it. Not only for a gimmick, it locked all the smokiness into the crab and gave nice earthy aroma to it. The natural umami of the crab itself and banana leaf was a stroke of genius. Just look at that bad boy. So beautiful and succulent.

    Kimukatsu [ Tebet, Jepang ]

I don't even know why this place is so damn hype

Beef Katsu Platter. First, I wanna tell you not to expect it to be served like this. If you've followed me from the beginning then you know that I wanna show you how they will serve their menu. This whole replating thing is really not my thing. But, thing happens so yeah, I didn't have the chance to take the original version. (It's not like someone forced me to do it, I forgot to take the original version and just realized afterward)

Moving on. You can choose 3 types of beef katsu, I tried the Negi, Cheese and Garlic. The ouside batter was crunchy but not that crunchy, I'd prefer it to be a lil bit crunchier. However, that layer of meat saved the dish. Because the cut it thinly, the texture was super tender. I mean the meat alone was tender enough, but the way the cut it made it even more tender. So yeah, I have no complain. And you can mix your own dipping sauce. The original way to make the sauce is by grinding the sesame seeds then mix it with the katsu sauce. Me? I used the seed as it was, grinding it would bring the flavor and aroma but lose the crunchy texture. I'd love to bite it and let the aroma kick inside my mouth. Well, you can do what you want.

Next, let's talk about the filling.
The Negi was... hmm... how to say it, I didn't taste the negi at all. The savoury beef covered it. Shame, if I could taste just a lil bit of earthiness from that negi, it would have amazed me so much.
The garlic was good. A bit garlicky flavor to enhance the savoury beef and giving it a bold taste. I recommend this one.
The cheese was so so. I'm not a big fan of cheese from the very start. Then, the melted cheese wasn't really 'melted'. The amount of cheese was very very little, I barely saw the melted cheese. Then, I took the photo so damn long, it's no longer melted. Yup, they have nothing to do with that one. The blame is totally on me.

Spicy Salmon Roll. Flame seared salmon, crab stick, crunchy panko (crunchy crumbs) and spicy mayonnaise. The spicy mayo was very pungent and just slightly spicy. I gotta say, not my kind of sushi. I tasted nothing but mayonnaise. I think it's overpowering the other ingredients, even the salmon. However, it's still edible but just not memorable.

Tori Kawa aka chicken skin (Appetizer). Let me tell you what's written in their book menu, "Be ready for this five-star crispy marinated chicken skin. Can you handle its perfection?". Now lemme tell you what I think. 5 star crispy? I don't think it deserves 2 star. It's just mediocre chicken skin. Lacked of crispiness and salty savoury flavor I gotta say. Not better than Wandi/Mubarok and clearly can't be compared to KFC's skin. It's not the worst chicken skin I've had but to say it as 5 star, not even close. It costs 9K++ so yeah, don't expect much.

Piyo Piyo Menchi. Once again, let me tell you what's written in the menu, "perfectly soft-boiled egg wrappped in thin layer of seasoned minced chicken", and if you see the picture out of it, it's super tempting with the "MUST TRY" stamp. Now, here's the fact or maybe it only happened in my case, my bad luck strike again? They served me a not so round egg. It's already "MELETOT" when they served it (pardon my singlish language, I don't know how to describe it) and the melted yolk was gone. I barely saw the minced chicken. It's more like super super thin instead of thin and I couldn't taste it at all. It tasted like your daily soft boiled egg without the yolk and covered with batter. For me your specialty dish is not your forte. To be frank, that's the most anticlimatic dish I've tried. The expectation was high but the presentation and taste were meh. And the price is 25K++, really?

Manggo Rainbow Cake. It's quite good actually. It looked like it's gonna be more dense, but it's quite fluffy and light. It tasted sweet and sweet thing is not my forte. My judgement is biased.

Matcha feat Ogura Mousse Cake. I tasted this and for me, it's okey. Just lil higher than mediocre. The matcha was quite strong but the texture was a bit dry. The mousse was so so, not really special. Well, I can't compare this one with the amausaan one. I haven't tried it yet. If you ask me, I'd say price wise, it's worth it.

Matcha Mochi Ice Cream. I was quite surprised when I tasted the matcha ice cream inside the mochi. It's rare to find a bold matcha taste in mochi ice cream. Normally it'll taste sweet but not here. I gotta say it's better this way. The mochi itself was quite chewy and sweet. Wait, not chewy, it's more like stretchy. And the bitter matcha ice cream was completely match with the sweet mochi.

Black Sesame Mochi Ice Cream. The mochi was the same with the matcha one, but they used black sesame ice cream inside. It's little sweet but not too sweet. The taste of black sesame was super smooth and very gentle. I'm a black sesame lover (old school yes) so when I saw this on the menu, it hyped me up. Name me a good place to eat black sesame mochi ice cream, not much right? That's exactly why I'm gonna give a high rating for the dessert.

Overall, their beef katsu was quite solid. The texture was there, the flavor was there and the price is still reasonable. And most of the desserts tasted great. I'd come again if they open new branch around my home. To travel that far only for this? Sorry but I don't think it's worth it.

    Tony Roma's [ Gandaria, Barat ]

    you can never beat classic

The Original Baby Back Ribs. Tender, pork loin meat, basted with Tony Roma's original BBQ sauce. You can choose between half slab (6 racks), regular slab (9 racks) or full slab (12 racks). Little tip from me, full slab is a must. There's no chance you can stop chewing at the half or the regular one. It's so so gewd. I ordered the full slab and somehow I got 16 racks, I don't know who cooked me but may God bless you. The meat was super tender, almost fall off the bone kind of tender. And the bbq sauce was also good. Sweet, savory, but not overpowering the goodness of that beautiful ribs meat. Beside the ribs you'll get 2 side dishes. Here's the options, cole slaw, ranch style beans, corn on the cobs, rice, baked potato, french fries or mashed potato. Nothing particularly unique, so I chose french fries and cole slaw. The cole slaw was bland and the french fries was mediocre. Nothing special but not a single care was given, the ribs was the only thing matter.

Tony Sampler. A trio of appetizers. Fire wings, spinach artichoke dip and half onion loaf served with dipping sauces. The fire wings was so so. The chicken looked red but it's not spicy, just slightly hot. The meat was tender though, but not really special. It served with bleu cheese dipping sauce. The sauce was super bland. Normally bleu cheese has a strong odor and sharp so it's not for everyone. But this dipping had none of it.

If you ask me what's the most iconic and must order in Tony Roma's I gotta say it's the onion loaf. The ribs is tasty but nothing compares to their onion loaf. Giant hand cut onions, light breaded, deep fried and served with their signature BBQ sauce. Crunchy and super fragrant and tasty and sweet and oniony obviously. No matter how many times I eat it, it always blows my mind. The BBQ sauce was sweet and bit sour, tasted good but I always eat it without the dipping.

I really thought the main star of that sampler was gonna be that onion loaf, but the spinach artichoke dip surpised me. Creamy spinach blended with a mix of cheeses and artihoke hearts. Served with tortilla chips, sour cream and salsa. First, the salsa was terrible, for me it had an absurd taste so I put that aside. Then the sour cream was not really sour so I didn't enjoy that either. But the creamy spinach was in a whole different level. It's a little bit sweet and earthy and creamy thanks to the cheese but it also had some sourness from the artichoke. It's complex and somehow the combination of everything just kind of fits perfectly. The tortilla was so so actually, nothing particularly special, but it's perfect to scoop that creamy spinach and adding crispy texture out of it.

Sama Dengan [ Kalibata, Kafe ]

    Hidden spot

Ice Caffe Latte Mint. Caffe latte with extra mint flavor. The waiter had already told me that it's gonna tasted on the sweet side but when I saw the mint flavor, I just could't help myself from ordering it. Taste wise, it's good. The coffee was smooth and not too bold, the milk was not too creamy and the mint syrup was minty and yeah, a little too sweet. Btw, the place was cool, small but cozy with friendly service. It surprised me to see this level of coffee shop in this hood.

    McDonald's [ Thamrin ]

    Spicy but not tasty

Mcspicy Peri Peri. If I close my eyes and eat this, I ain't gonna guess it's peri peri. At least, that's not how I remember peri peri. The black bun was slight drier than their normal bun. The fried chicken fillet was great as always. Tender and crispy and savoury. However, I don't think the sauce compliment the chicken though. It's spicy and kinda over powering the other ingredients. It's not like the sauce was bad, I just don't like that kind of hotness. It's more on the peppery kind of spicy, the one that heats your throat and stomach. Lot of reviews give this menu a high rating, so I guess it's good. It's just not my thing. You should try this, at least once.

Fe Cafe [ Pluit, Kafe ]

pricey but tasty. oh, slow service btw

Crispy Buta's Belly. 11 hour 34 min pork belly, pickled salad, smoked chili peppers and toasted bread. The bread was crunchy and salty. The crust was crisp but the middle part was still soft, the chef did a great job. The pork belly was surprisingly good. At first sight I thought it's gonna be soggy since I saw it had lot of sauce, but I was wrong. The meat was super tender and easily fall apart with thin layer of fat and the skin was super crunchy. They did give a green thingy, not sure whether it's a sauce of a dipping but it tasted superb. It held a big role on that dish. Spread lot of that green thingy to the bread, put the pork belly on top of it then took a big bite. It's heavenly good. The pickled salad was also good. It had sourness from the tomato and sweetness from the onion. Actually I wanna give a full mark but it's quite pricey. 80K+ for a salad, 2 pieces of toasted bread and 7 slices of pork belly.

Paradise Dynasty [ Muara Karang, China ]

    Comfort food detected

Kue Beras Goreng Dengan Babi dan Sayur ala Shanghai. Wok-fried rice cake with rice and vegetables in shanghai style. The rice cake was chewy as it's supposed to be, not bland thanks to the sticky sauce and quite tasty. However, I didn't taste the distinctive wok fragrant, the smoky hot round fragrant, it missed that thing. They did give the fried pork fat. You know what, I love my lord then I love my lard. It's just so damn good. Small diced of fried pork lard, it's not melting in my mouth but when I bit it off, it tasted like burst of goodness.

Sup Pangsit Sayur. Vegetable and pork wonton in signature pork bone soup. The colour of the broth was milky white. Good indication that they really simmered the bone in a long time. It's rich, super rich to be exact and quite thick. I'd prefer to have a light clear broth, but the richness made me go easy on them. The dumpling itself was a real deal. It's sweet, it's salty, it's fatty. Exploding with juicy fattiness. And little tip, do not cut the dumpling in half or it's gonna be messy.

Bakmie Belawan Amin [ Jelambar, China ]

    Hidden gem in jelambar

They have 3 types of noodle. Small, medium and a wide one. My fav is gonna be the small one. Not too springy but not too soft either. The topping was generous. The dumpling was good, generous amount of meat inside and the skin wasn't easily break apart. The fish ball was so so, it's good but not chewy enough. The char siu, it's so mouth watering. Fatty, savory, sweet, it's so glorious. They did give shredded chicken, but I ain't like it. It's not like the taste was bad, I just don't like breast meat. It's a personal thing. And the most important thing, you can ask for fried pork lard. Like I've said, I love my lord then I love my lard. It's so damn good. Crispy, fatty and full of bomb flavor. And prise wise, it's a super great deal. Under 25K you'll get this whole thing.

Nasi Tim. When I eat nasi tim, I always put my concern on the texture of the rice itself. Here, it's just right. Not too soft but not too hard either. The topping was generous. Huge portion of minced chicken. So yes, it's halal. No pork detected. The combination of rice, sweet and salty minced chicken, sourness from the pickles (not only sweet, it also had such sweetness to it) and the spicy cayenne, bravo. They did give steamed egg, not really like the egg but look! The egg has 2 yolks! Just kidding, you won't get it. It's pure luck.

Soto Ayam. First of all, I wanna tell you this. You won't get it as tempting as this one. I did some trick to make the topping float on top, otherwise it's gonna be a soupy bowl. But don't worry, you'll get this much topping. You know me, I won't lie.

Everything was good, everything was well prepared. The soup was rich, not some watery broth kind of bullshit. They put lot of shredded chicken breast, I personally don't like chicken breast. But, there's no way to put thigh meat in soto. It won't absorb the richness of the broth. So it is what it is. And to make it even better, they put lot of fried shallot. It gave a whole different dimension to the broth. It's like the shallot put a layer of flavor to the already good broth.

All in general was good. Their nasi tim was tasty, the noodle was fabulous with generous amount of topping, and like I said their soto was also great. So it's like a one shop stop. There's everthing for everyone.

Ikan Lempah Bangka [ Cengkareng, Indonesia ]

Nothing to compare but I did enjoy this

Ikan Lempah Tenggiri. It had no fishiness at all. The fish was good. Juicy and meaty, not lean kind of fish at the first place. The owner said that she took the fish directly from Bangka. I'm not really sure whether that really necessarily needed, but it sounds cool right? The broth was super strong. A little bit sweet, lil salty and spicy and sour. Okey, it's more on the sour side to be exact. They used pineapple and galangal, I think that's why the broth was super rich. You gotta eat that with rice, otherwise it's gonna be too rich.

Was that a good dish? For me, yes. But if you ask me was it good Ikan Lempah dish? I ain't sure. I don't have any decent bangkanese food experience, so basically, I've nothing as comparison.
