    SaladStop! [ Thamrin ]

    Pricey healthy salad

    Bold Bulgogi. Romaine, bulgogi beef, cherry tomatoes, daikon, potatoes, sweet corn, alfalfa sprout and bulgogi aioli. Okey, let me be honest. It's not really that tasty and definitely pricey. But let's give this a second thought. It's passable, fresh, huge portion and the most important thing (make you feel) healthy. 

    The romaine was crunchy, the beef was lil sweet, crunchy and juicy cherry tomatoes and bit sweetness from the corn. Quite a package of flavors. Still, it tasted kinda bland. Oh, and the wrap was great. Not too thick but thick enough to hold all the components. Despite the lackluster appearance, it's supposed to be a healthy food. And healthy thing isn't meant to taste great. So if I put that as consideration, this salad thing was a real good deal.

    Yolk Belly [ Pantai Indah Kapuk, China ]

    Nice salted egg chicken

    Salted Pork Belly with Rice. How often you find pork belly with salted egg? Not that often right? I did try this and it's quite good. Fatty and bit creamy from the salted egg yolk. However, it's not as good as the chicken one. 

    The chicken was plump, juicy and crispy. The appriance wasn't as good as the pork one, but the taste was far tastier. So if you happen to come, I'd definitely recommend the chicken one.

    To complete the bowl, they did give an egg, cassava leaf and a bowl of sambal matah. The egg wasn't runny enough. 

    If it were, it'd taste even better. The cassava leaf was good. Soft and have such earthiness to it.

    If you pass the stand, you'll realize that the stand is literally next to one of the biggest salted egg branch, so you may change your mind and buy that one instead. I'm here encourage you not to do that. Try this one, you can compare both of it and you'll find that they're completely different. They all have their own strength.

    May Star - Hotel Le Grandeur [ Mangga Dua, China ]

    Some were so gewd, some just meh

    Baked Egg Tart. I really like the texture of the tart. Crunchy and crispy, just like it's suppose to be. However, the main star in this menu which is the egg was a total turn off. Yes the texture was good. Like custardy and moist with bright tempting yellow color, the top coat was kinda jelly-ish, which I love. But, the taste was super meh. Almost tasteless. No creaminess, no egginess, no nothing. Just slight sweet after taste. I expected something more, something eggy, something creamy. Maybe it's just a bad batch of egg tart? I don't know.

    Steamed Dumpling with Mixed Mushroom & Truffle Oil. I'm gonna give an extra credit for this gorgeous innovation. To be honest, it looked like a round shape choipan and it also tasted like one. The texture of the dumpling was glutinous and sticky. The filling was thin-long sliced mushroom. I did like it. The juiciness of the mushroom that contrast the stickiness of the dumpling itself. Interesting I must say. I can smell light truffle aroma from the dumpling. Not a strong truffle taste, just a slight hint after taste and it's good.

    Pan-fried Turnip Cake. Call me old school or whatsoever, but radish cake is always a must order in dimsum places. By far, this is the tastiest radish cake I've ever had. It tasted like the traditional radish cake. No xo sauce, no beansprout, no chili, no nothing, just pure radish. Very basic but super tasty. They pan fried the radish into perfection. The outside was bit burnt and gave crisp texture and it had that charred smokiness to it, but the inside was so soft and just a little bit dense.

    Compared to my favourite dimsum place, this place had no chance to compete at all. To be honest, I was totally ready to bash the shit out of this place. Most of the dimsum I tried were meh. But, when I tried this radish cake, Oh my God, swear to God, it's so gewd. This dish saved this place. A must order one.

    Gaya Gelato [ Slipi, Es Krim ]

    pretty balance

    Medium Cone. You can pick up to 3 flavors. I chose the Cioccolato, Fragole and Straciatella. 

    The Cioccolato was good. So chocolatey, not too sweet and not too bitter.
    The Fragole was sweet and fresh. It's not sour strawberry kind of sorbet. Slightly sweet and I could taste strong strawberry flavor. 

    The Straciatella was the best out of this three. Normally I don't like vanilla flavor. But here, it's not too sweet, not too milky, just a hint of vanilla taste with choco chips. So yeah, I did enjoy this one. 

    This was my second experience with Gaya Gelato. My first experience wasn't that great, but now it's not too milky and not too sweet. Maybe I picked the wrong flavor previously? Not sure. But I did enjoy my second visit.

    Kata Kata [ Muara Karang, Kafe ]

    It has potential

    XL Cheeseburger. It's been a while since I had a decent burger. So when I saw this menu, I gotta try it. The plating was super simple. Big round plate and they put the burger right in the middle. The also gave a batch of french fries in a mini cart kind of thing. The fries was not special at all, just mediocre fried fries. Well, it's a side dish so didn't really matter. The burger was quite good actually. They cooked the beef medium to medium well. Not too raw but not over cooked. I'd prefer the patty to be medium rare though. But, still satisfying. The mozzarella cheese and sliced cheddar were not really strong. Just made the burger slightly saltier and cheesier. The sunny side up made the burger creamier which I like but messier at the same time. The caramelized onion was the bomb. Sweet, oniony, earthy, super fragrant. The onion really boosted the burger to the next level. The bbq sauce and creamy mushroom were so so. Nothing stand out. And the sweet potato chips was unique. Adding crunchy texture and nice sweet earthy flavor. 

    The bun was pretty oily and flat. The bun was quite wide then the patty and other components was way too small. They stacked all the component right in the middle, looked like a tower that easily crumble. There's no glamourous way to eat this. For me it's not their greatest forte. Overall it's good but not mind blowing. It had potential.

    Marco Padang Grill [ Thamrin, Indonesia ]

    A plate to share

    Nasi Padang Berjama'ah. First impression, it's not huge. It's HUGEEEE. They said it's a package for 6 persons. I gotta say it's huge enough to be eaten for a whole village. Yeah, it's too much but you get my point right? Swipe, I put hands as comparison. 

    The rice was good. They said it's nasi kebuli. For me, it had similar taste, not 100% there. Imagine you mix nasi kebuli and lamb fried rice, then you got this. Oh, and generous amount of lamb. 

    The lamb was tender and had no gamey taste at all. Great. 

    The fried chicken was also good. For me, it's still tender eventhough it'd been sitting like 30mins. Not their fault, I took the picture too damn long. The flavor was infused to the meat. Don't you hate it when you get a super flavorful chicken skin but the meat is bland? 

    The crispy dendeng was too crunchy for me. I felt like eating cracker with bomb of flavor. I do prefer my dendeng to be more chewy. To give some texture to bite. Well, it's my preference though. 

    Their egg was dense and so herby. Too herby and salty for my taste bud. You might like it. The taste just didn't work on me. 

    The star for me was easily the kacamata petai. OMG. First look and my mind went like "look like they sliced the stink beans with the skin and deep fried the whole thing. Silly me, no one would do that." After that, the chef himself confirmed that it's sliced fried stink beans with the skin. It blew my mind. Not too stink, but it still had that distinctive aroma. Then the skin had a slightly greasy and crunchy texture. Superb. It might be a simple trick for the chef, but for me it's a huge leap of Indonesian culinary. 

    They also served it with red and green chilli, melinjo cracker and the iconic pink padangnese cracker which I love so much. Light, crispy, and had little tasty flavor. 

    This is their new special ramadhan menu. Not sure how long they'll keep this. So don't wait. Call your companion and try this. A great way to BukBer.

    Tai Wah Noodle [ Pantai Indah Kapuk, Singapura ]

    I love my lord then I love my lard

    Mee Pok. Not your usual noodle. The sauce was very special. They used black vinegar and lot of other good stuff. I'm typically not a fan of vinegar saucey taste but this one was quite good. Lot of flavors. Saltiness from the soya but the vinegar was the thing that more dominant. No need to worry, it's not like super strong one. It's subtle and quite gentle taste. 

    The texture of the meepok was damn good. Springy and but smooth. I like small type of noodle, but this one was damn great. They also put minced meat, meatballs, liver and fried flat fish. The meatball was mediocre. Yeah, it's meatball, didn't expect much. The minced chicken was flavorful and soft. They minced the meat, so it didn't have much texture left. The liver was superb. Tasted super fresh. Just a slight chewy, earthy and had that irony taste to it. 

    They also put fried flat fish on top of it. Please do me a favor to me, do not eat it alone. Eat it with the noodle. The fish had such acquired taste, it's not for everyone. I did feel like eating burnt fish. You either love it or hate it. Still such a fun experience. You'll realize that they put pork lard inside, but I asked for more. Yes, more pork lard means more goodness.

    Ippudo [ Thamrin, Jepang ]

    The bun blew my mind

    Spicy Pork Bun. Juicy braised pork belly served with Ippudo special sauce. It's a bit lacklaster. I honestly expecting it to be pretty shit. And guess what, this dish blew my mind. 

    First thing first, the texture of the bun was a win. So fluffy, so light, so airy. Look at that pork, I mean that glorious pork. So tender, lean, fatty, and just slightly spicy. It looked colourless but surprisingly flavorful. 

    I don't like bread at all, but I don't mind eating this every single day. From now on, it's my benchmark for pork bun. Undeniably amazing. 

    Ps : it's a new branch. I saw a small banner kind of thing on my table said "tag us and get .... free". I don't remember what can I get from tagging them. To be honest, I did want to tag them. Who doesn't like free gift, but there's literally no signal there and they provide no wifi. Even the waitress knew that and said that there's no signal inside. I kinda curious what do you expect us to do. Go outside and walk around only to find signal and tag you?

    Oak Barrel [ Cengkareng, Kafe ]

    nasty mushroom soup

    Mushroom Cream Soup. First thing first, the thickness of the soup was ridiculous. It's more like a thick sauce rather than soup. The flavor was way too creamy and thick. I took 5 spoons and that's it, couldn't take anymore. Left it like 30secs and a layer of fat jelly thingy came out on the surface and it made the soup less appetizing. The garlic crouton, it's no longer crisp and tasted like it's been sitting like several days. Definitely not a fresh baked one. But yeah, it had nice garlic flavor to it. Not too garlicky but I knew it's garlic one. At first my thought went like the portion was way too small, but later I felt lucky it's not that big. 

    However, I do recommend this place. The place was cozy to hang with friends and affordable price obviously

    Salt and Pepper [ Palmerah ]

    Authentic taiwanese snacks

    Taiwanese XXL Crispy Chicken. I know, when I say taiwanese crispy chicken your mind goes to the shil*n branch. Why don't you try this one. This might change your preference. I was a bit skeptical before I tried it and end up prefer this one. The texture was well layered. Really like the texture. Crunchy and crispy batter and moist chicken meat. They fried it dry so I found no soggy batter that no one ever asked for. They did give some greenies, maybe basil leaf, not so sure. It gave earthiness and slight bitter taste to the rich chicken meat. It has every potential to be great. The price is slightly cheaper than the rest and very substantial. It's huge enough to share. I gotta say it's totally worth every money you spend on. 

    Fun fact : I just got this information lately. The owner went to Taiwan only to learn how to fry the chicken to perfection and he brought the seasonings from there to be used here. Authentic taiwanese snacks? Quite close.
